Roger Federer took just 58 minutes to book his place in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters on Thursday.

The number four seed beat unseeded Czech player Lukas Rosol in straight sets.

Federer made a slow start and trailed 4-2 in the first set, but reeled off ten of the next eleven games to set up a last eight encounter with number nine seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Federer has a 10-4 career record against the Frenchman, but will be mindful of two significant defeats - in the French Open quarter-finals last year and in the last eight of Wimbledon in 2011.

Second seed Novak Djokovic needed a little over three quarters of an hour to reserve his spot.

Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta was the victim, and Djokovic dropped only one game in an emphatic 6-0, 6-1 win.

The defending champion, who ended Rafael Nadal's eight-year reign in the final last year, would face either Tomas Berdych or another Spaniard, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez for a place in the semi-finals and Berdych took a scrappy first set 6-4.

However, the Czech number five seed struggled throughout. Garcia-Lopez levelled by taking the second set and broke the Berdych serve twice in the decider to close out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win in just over two hours.

Garcia-Lopez has lost all five of his previous meetings with Djokovic, but the pair haven't played each other since 2011.
