Top seed Rafael Nadal progressed to the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters with a straights victory over Teymuraz Gabashvili on Wednesday.

The Spainard brushed aside his Russian oppoent. ranked 58 in the world, 6-1, 6-4 to set up Andreas Seppi.

Fourth seed Roger Federer was equally untroubled in his match against Radek Stepanek on route to a 6-1 6-2 win.

Federer has never won in Monte Carlo, losing in three successive finals to Nadal from 2006-08.

Elsewhere eighth seeded Milos Raonic beat Yen-Hsun Lu in three sets.

Lu won the first set winning a hard-fought tie-break 7-4, but was unable to maintain his intensity and won only three games in the final two sets as Raonic ran out a 7-6, 6-2, 6-1 winner.
