Football scarves donated by football clubs and fans from across the world were laid out in the centre circle at Anfield on Tuesday, forming the shape of the number '96'.

25 years ago to the day, 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsbrorough Stadium in Sheffield.

Liverpool players past and present, including captain Steven Gerrard - and the families of the victims were among those present, as an estimated 30,000 people gathered for the moving memorial service.

    SOUNDBITE (English)BRENDAN RODGERS, Manager, Liverpool

"Mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, friends and fellow supporters, you have all stood for 25 years together, to honour and fight for the 96 people we lost. Your courage, your fortitude, your resilience, your dignity, and your love for the people you lost, that's what inspires me every day of my life, as the manager of Liverpool football club.

"And thank you for the inspiration you give to us all. The courage, the dignity in all the most trying circumstances imaginable. We will always strive to honour you, the families, and the memory of the 96 people we lost. You'll Never Walk Alone."

Everton manager Roberto Martinez was also present - his words show that in times of tragedy, sporting rivalry can be put to one side.

    SOUNDBITE (English)ROBERTO MARTINEZ, Manager, Everton

"I was only 15 in April 1989, football mad kid, football mad family, like many of you today. And we heard the news. We heard about Hillsborough. And as a family, we could not believe the pain and horror that the families would get by receiving the news that their loved ones would not be coming home, would not be coming home from a football match. How can anyone die by watching a the game you love? "That is not right, that isn't fair."

The service, which started with local clergymen reading out the names of the 96 victims, finished with fans singing a stirring rendition of Liverpool football club's anthem, "You'll Never Walk Alone."

If Liverpool can win the Premier League this season it would be a fitting tribute to the fans who lost their lives on that fateful day 25 years ago.
