Stefano Domenicali has resigned as Ferrari's team principal following the Formula One team's negative start to this season, and disappointing previous seasons.

Domenicali had been in charge at Ferrari since 2008, during which time he has managed only a constructors championship, back in his first year in charge.

The Italian has resigned stating that his decision was "difficult" but he "assumes responsability for the lack of results in recent years."

Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen are yet to secure a podium finish this season after three races of the calendar.

Reports in Italy suggest that Marco Mattiacci, president and CEO of Ferrari North America will replace Domenicali on a temporary basis.

The Italian powerhouse will hope the change can breathe some life into their season.

Ferrari in fact has not won a grand prix since Alonso's victory in Spain almost a year ago, the team's worst run in nearly 20 years.
