London welcomed its Marathon runner with a beautiful day of sunshine on Sunday.

The runners took off and a leading group was soon formed with Haile Gebreselassie heading it.

Mo Farah on the other hand elected to stay behind in a second group.

In the women's race, Edna Kiplagat and Florence Kiplagat of Kenya battled in an engaging duel.

It was Edna Kiplagat who surged ahead of her rival in the final hundred metres to take the tape in a time of 2 hours, 20 minutes and 21 seconds.

It was her first victory in London, on her fourth attempt at the Marathon.

Olympic 10,000 metre champion Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia took third.

In the men's race, Wilson Kipsang powered home in the end, crossing the line in 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 29 seconds, a new course record.

The Kenyan finished well clear of his compatriot Stanley Biwott, while last year's winner Tsegaye Kebede took third.

Farah disappointed as he finished in eighth place and failed to beat the British record he had been targetting.
