Intro:
Fernando Verdasco beats compatriot Nicolas Almagro in straights sets to take the ATP Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston, USA on Sunday.
Script:
Fernando Verdasco ended his four-year drought by taking the ATP Clay Court title against Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 7-6. It was Verdasco's sixth ATP title.
The all-Spanish final was, predictable, a battle played out from the baseline with Verdasco just edging the hard-fought encounter.
Verdasco took the the first set 6-3, breaking Almagro's serve in the fourth game before going onto to take the second, and deciding set in a tie-break 7-4.
Almagro reached set point five times against Verdasco's serve in the ninth game of second set, but couldn't convert his chance to level the game.
Verdasco last tasted silverware when he won the Barcelona Open in 2010 by beating Robin Soderling and victory in Houston would have tasted sweet for him after a long wait to get hold of a trophy.
