Rio 2016 Olympic Park construction workers continued their strike on Tuesday, one day after they clashed with private security personnel at the site.

The strike, involving around 3,500 workers, began last Thursday, and Rio Mais - the consortium building the Olympic venues - said it was unclear when work would continue.

The labour dispute started around which union represents the construction workers.

An agreement was reached and the Light Industry Workers' Union joined the movement, which also involves benefits and working conditions.

One of their new demands is the reinstatement of a worker who, according to colleagues, was coerced to resign by a private security person who pointed a gun to the worker's head.

Carlos Alberto Oliveira said that this security guard shot twice towards the workers.

"A fellow worker went to talk to him, asking why he coerced our colleague, putting a gun in his head to make him resign. When we approached him, he felt threatened, grabbed his gun and told us 'back off! back off!'. Without any reason to do so, he pulled his gun and shot in our direction. When the others workers who joined us went into his direction, to ask him why he did that, he ran away, shooting two more shots."

The strikes are sure to capture the attention of the International Olympic Committee executive board, which is meeting this week.

IOC President Thomas Bach has frequently stated that Rio "doesn't have a day to lose," and some fear it could face chronic delays similar to those hitting the upcoming World Cup, which begins in two months.
