Vladimir Vasilyev wins the second leg of the 2014 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge

    Vladimir Vasilyev won the second leg of the 2014 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge on Monday (April 7th) to take the overall lead in the cars category, while Marc Coma was fastest on two wheels and claimed top spot in the motorbikes standings.

    Monday's second leg of the 24th Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge included a special stage section that covered 269.7 kilometres.

    Defending motorbikes champion Marc Coma moved up into first place overall after winning the leg.

    The Spanish KTM rider completed the special stage in three hours, 36 minutes and two seconds.

    His British team-mate Sam Sunderland ,the winner of leg one, finished two minutes behind Coma and took second place.

    As a result, Sunderland also slipped to second in the overall standings, one minute and 25 seconds behind Coma.

    Portugal's Paulo Goncalves finished a further six seconds slower than Coma's pace in the leg and sits third overall, four minutes and 16 seconds off the lead.

    The leg victory in the cars section went to Vladimir Vasilyev, who also claimed the overall lead.

    The Russian crossed the finishing line more than seven minutes ahead of his nearest challenger, Marek Dabrowski.

    Local entrant Yahya Al Helei took third place in the leg.

    Vasilyev opened a 44-second advantage over nearest challenger Dabrowski as a result, with another Pole, Adam Malysz, now sitting in third place overall.
