The second round of the Modern Pentathlon World Cup in Cairo, Egypt concluded with the first finals of this year's series, after punishing temperatures in Acapulco, Mexico forced an early halt to the opening round.

In the women's competition, China's Qian Chen led the way in the opening event - fencing - ahead of Laura Asadauskaite from Lithuania.

Chen increased her overall lead with the seventh fastest time in the swimming pool, but failed to impress in the horse riding.

That allowed Poland's Oktawia Nowacka to move into the joint lead with Chen heading into the final event - the combined, cross-country running and laser shooting.

World number one Asadauskaite, who was sitting in third, used her blistering speed and accuracy with the pistol to win in a time of 13 minutes, 9.46 seconds.

Nowacka took second place, with Chen forced to settle for third.

In the men's competition, Dmytro Kirpulyanskyy of Ukraine claimed first place in the fencing, ahead of Italy's Riccardo de Luca and Frenchman Christopher Patte.

None of them excelled in the pool with crowd favourite Omar El Geziry coming first.

Kirpulyanskyy and El Geziry clinched a share of first place in the horse riding and it was the Egyptian pentathlete that started the combined first.

He was quickly caught by Kirpulyanskyy, but neither man excelled in the laser shooting and that allowed de Luca and Patte back into contention.

The latter pair duly passed Kirpulyanskyy and El Geziry.

De Luca shot without fault, while Patte missed a couple of targets, costing him vital seconds and the chance of victory.

De Luca crossed the finishing line in 11 minutes, 37.16 seconds, with Patte in second before Jan Kuf came through to complete the podium places.
