The LPGA's Kraft Nabisco Championship got underway in sunny California on Thursday.
Mariajo Uribe almost saved her round with a dramatic birdie putt at the final hole, her ball sat on the lip of the cup but refused to drop.
Uribe carded a one-over-par round of 73 and sits tied for 31st place on the leaderboard.
Sandra Gal came close to a hole-in-one with her tee shot at the par-three 17th.
Gal's shot looked on course, but an unfortunate bounce took it away from the pin.
Gal made the simple putt for birdie and finished the day level par, tied in 21st.
Anna Norqvist also birdied the 17th hole and that gave her a share of the early lead.
The Swedish golfer finished with a par on the final hole to card a one-under after the opening round.
Cristie Kerr also flirted with the opening round lead after a long birdie putt at the same 17th hole.
Kerr finished her round with five birdies, including three on her final nine holes for a three-under-par 69.
Amy Yang saved par at the 15th hole after a great bunker shot.
The South Korean sits in a great position after the first round following a four-under-par 68.
Michelle Wie also played a strong opening round.
At the 11th, Wie lined up her unorthodox putting stance and sank an eagle to drop to five-under.
The 24-year-old was tied for the lead after playing a four-hole stretch in five-under but finished the day one shot back.
The leader after the first round is Chinese golfer Shanshan Feng.
Feng shot a six-under 66 in perfect morning conditions at the first major championship of the year - the 24-year-old carded seven birdies and just a single bogey.
