The iconic Berlin skyline was bathed in sunshine and temperatures touching 20 degrees as the 34th Berlin Half Marathon got underway.

Tens of thousands of locals took part, but the focus was firmly on the Kenyan Leonard Komon.

The world record holder in the 10 and 15 km road races - he was the class act in the field.

The race developed into a battle between him and countryman Abraham Cheroben.

The pair broke away from the pack, leaving the others trailing.

Not so close in the women's - Ethiopia's Tadelech Bekele breaking away and taking a comfortable win.

She couldn't break her half marathon record of 1:09:31 - coming home in 1:10:05, with Kenya's Agnes Mutune 8 seconds further back.

German Sabrina Mockenhaupt delighted the home crowd in third.

Meanwhile the men's race went down to the wire.

Komon just taking the win on the line in 59:14, with Cheroben second in the same time. Richard Mengich was third, over a minute off the pace.

Remarkably Kenyan runners took a clean sweep on the top 10 positions. A show of distance strength from the African country.
