There were one or two crashes in Switzerland, but it was a smooth day for Olympic champion Matthias Mayer of Austria who claimed his first career FIS World Cup win on Wednesday.

Mayer underlined his impressive recent form crossing the line in a time of one minute, 29.99 seconds.

The Austrian finished 0.11-of-second faster than both Christof Innerhofer of Italy and Ted Ligety of the United States, who tied for second.

And fifth place was enough for Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal to retake the lead in the overall World Cup standings.

Svindal earned 45 points to move 41 ahead of Marcel Hirscher of Austria, who does not compete in downhill races. He had already clinched the season-long downhill title before the World Cup Finals.
