The 2014 Tirreno Adriatico began on Wednesday with a time trial from Donoratico to San Vincenzo.

Orica Greenedge set a time of 20 minutes and 24 seconds for the 18.5 kilometre course, putting them into the lead.
Movistar Team came close to challenging their time.

Movistar, who feature general classification challenger Nairo Quintana, finished seven seconds behind, in a time of 20 minutes and 34 seconds.

Omega Pharma Quick-Step were the second-to-last team out on the course.

There was some controversy as Tony Martin appeared to push team-mate Mark Cavendish with his hand, potentially incurring a penalty.

Omega Pharma Quick-Step crossed the line 20 minutes and 13 seconds, to set fastest time.

After it initially appeared Orica Greenedge had been given the victory, the commissaires decided not to penalise Omega Pharma Quick-Step, and declared them winners.

Mark Cavendish crossed the line first, so he takes the leader's jersey.

The Tirreno Adriatico continues on Thursday with the 166-kilometre second leg, from San Vincenzo to Cascina.
