    Defending world champion Tony Cairoli surged to the top of this season's championship classification thanks to victories in both Sunday's (March 9) races at the MX GP of Thailand.

    The second round of the FIM MX GP series proved to be a tough day for competitors and organisers alike.

    Hot and humid conditions welcomed the riders in Thailand, with temperatures soaring to 40 degrees centigrade in the sunlight.

    The staff of the Si Racha track were forced to dump 50 thousand litres of water on the course in order to control the dust.

    Tony Cairoli won both races on the circuit last season and was looking to repeat himself this time around.

    The Italian managed to first overhaul Clement Desaille before reeling in Shaun Simpson by the end of the second lap.

    Cairoli eventually taking the flag in a time of 34 minutes, 26.3 seconds - Desaille was second while Jeremy van Horebeek completed the podium.

    Race two saw van Horebeek start strongly, but a series of mistakes allowed Cairoli back into the race.

    The dirt bike maestro eventually clinching top spot and win number two of the day.

    The KTM man securing 50 points - enough to see him leap from third to first in the overall standings with 92 points, 16 clear of Maximilian Nagl.
