Sergei Bubka's indoor pole vault world record had been standing since February 21st 1993 and the Ukrainian was in the Donetsk crowd to see it being broken almost 21 years later.

It was 2012 Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie who managed to surpass Bubka's mark of 6.15 metres when the 27-year-old vaulted a height of 6.16 metres (20 feet, two and half inches).

Lavillenie broke the mark at his first attempt and the Frenchman described his achievement as "just crazy".

Bubka, the 1988 Olympic champion, applauded the feat.

Lavillenie clearly elated with his record-breaking jump, had this to say afterwards....

"So for the first one it was like I want to do my best, do the best try I can do and when I see I was over it was just incredible you know. I wasn't thinking that I was able to do it now, so that's just crazy."

Now the Frenchman will surely have his sights set on the outdoor record. Bubka still holds that record of 6.14 metres (20 feet one and three quarter inches) which he accomplished in 1994.
