French Olympic Committee president, Denis Masseglia, said France's first medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games -- won by Martin Fourcade, who claimed gold in the biathlon 12.5km pursuit on Monday -- was 'a wonderful victory'. Fourcade clocked a time of 33 minutes 48.6 seconds to finish 14.1 seconds ahead of his nearest rival in Sochi. Czech Republic's Ondrej Moravec took silver, with Jean Guillaume Beatrix , also of France, winning bronze.

SOUNDBITE: (French) Denis Masseglia, French Olympic Committee president:
"Many people here see this as a wonderful victory for Martin Fourcade, he has been number one (world number one) in biathlon since the Games in Vancouver. Today he is an Olympic gold medallist, this is the confirmation that he is an Olympic champion. Besides, he was completely in control both on the cross-country skiing and the shooting parts. Besides, Jean-Guillaume Beatrix came third; this is pure happiness."
