The inaugural Dubai Tour has been won by America's Taylor Phinney. The BMC rider held onto the lead despite a third stage win in a row for Germany's Marcel Kittel.

The Giant-Shimano rider finished the final 123 kilometre stage in just over two hours and forty one minutes.

The German dominated the sprint finish to come in ahead of Australian Mark Renshaw and Italy's Andrea Guardini. The win was not enough for overall victory but he did at least finish top of the points classification.

Phinney though picked up the trophy, having been in the lead since the opening day, and the American was happy enough not to have thrown it away.

SOUNDBITE (English): Taylor Phinney, winner of Dubai Tour 2014:
"For sure, I'm relieved, every day it felt like it was my race to lose, so every day I was relieved, but having a great team around me gave me a lot of confidence these days, and after performing well yesterday I know that today, barring a disaster, I would be coming here with the overall win. I'm super happy."

So delight for Phinney but it was a frustrating day for Britain's Mark Cavendish who had a puncture and Slovakia's Peter Sagan who took his annoyance out on his bike after falling in the final four kilometres.
