Kidnap threats sent to Austrian Olympic team

    The Austrian Olympic Committee has received an anonymous letter containing a kidnap threat against Alpine skier Marlies Schild and skeleton pilot Janine Flock as the Austrian team arrived in Sochi for the Winter Olympics on Tuesday (February 4).

    The Austrian Olympic Committee has received an anonymous letter containing a kidnap threat, just days before the Winter Olympics begin in Sochi.

    Written in German, the letter was posted into the Austrian Olympic Committee's mailbox in Vienna on Monday. The letter contained a kidnap threat against Alpine skier Marlies Schild and skeleton pilot Janine Flock.

    However secretary general Peter Mennel, was remaining calm, despite the incident -

    SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Mennel, secretary general of the Austrian Olympic Committee:
    "We have two security people here and if the threat is confirmed as actual we will give additional security to the athletes."

    Russian and IOC officials say they are confident that the 6,000 athletes and several hundred thousand spectators will be safe at the Games.
