Fires and crashes interrupt Powerboating qualifying

There was plenty of drama on the Sharjah waters before Alex Carella of the Qatar Team topped the timesheets in qualification for powerboating's F1H2O Grand Prix on Thursday.

    Script:

The final race of the 2013 F1H2O powerboating season takes place in the UAE on Friday and the title is still up for grabs.

But that was the last thing on people's minds when Paul Shepard's engine blew during the first qualifying session and the South African had to be rescued.

The yellow flag was out again in Q2 - championship leader Sami Selio was going for an ultra-fast lap when he rolled his boat.

His Mad-Croc Baba Racing Team mechanics will have to work through the night to repair the damage and get his boat ready for Friday's GP.

Selio holds a narrow two point lead over Shaun Torrente and four over Torrente's Qatar Team colleague and reigning champion Alex Carella in the standings.

Q3 took place without Selio and his rival Carella took a step towards his third title by topping the timesheets with a lap time of 45.52 seconds.

Torrente was the next fastest, half a second slower than his team-mate.

Frenchman Philippe Chiappe qualified in third ahead of local favourite Ahmed Al Hameli of Team Abu Dhabi.
