Israeli protests outside UEFA headquarters

Saturday, January 26 2013 by SNTV
  • Intro:

A pro-Palestinian activist group occupied the reception of UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday to protest against Israel's hosting of the European Under-21 Championship in June.

UEFA President Michel Platini spent 30 minutes meeting with the protesters, delaying a scheduled news conference to report on his board's meeting.
The tournament is scheduled to be played from June the 5th to the 18th in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Netanya and Petach Tikva.

The protesters argue that three of the stadiums are built on the sites of former Palestinian villages which were demolished.

"Yesterday, effectively, some people did ask me. I will tell what I told them - "let me think about it, I will take a decision during the current year."

    SOUNDBITE (French):

"I think a large majority voted for planning a European under-21 Championship in Israel. Now, you know there has been trouble there for a very, very long time. And we try to do something to help the young people, the people, to have a better life. And so we are trying through football - either in Israel or in Palestine to help the youth."

    SOUNDBITE (French):

"The people who came here today didn't exactly know all of what we are doing, but we do a lot for things to get better there."
