Vissel Kobe were relegated from Japan's top flight after suffering a 1-0 loss to Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the J League on Saturday.

Newly crowned Japanese J-League champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima wrapped up their 2012 season on the road on Saturday against a Vissel Kobe team fighting to avoid relegation.

Vissel did little to help their cause as Kunie Kitamoto fouled Sanfrecce captain Hisato Sato in the box.

The referee awarded Hiroshima the penalty and Koji Morisaki delivered from the spot as the visitors took a 1-0 lead.

The goal woke up the Vissel attack and the hosts nearly levelled in the 69th minute with a shot from substitute Ryota Morioka.

Sanfrecce counter-attacked in the 87th minute and would have put the match completely out of their host's reach had it not been for some goalkeeping heroics from Kobe's Kenta Tokushige, who stopped the shot by Koji Morisaki.

With Albirex Niigata having won, Kobe needed at least a draw to remain in the top flight, but a last-ditch corner kick resulted in nothing and the final whistle blew to confirm a 1-0 Sanfrecce Hiroshima victory, dooming Vissel Kobe to relegation.

Albirex Niigata survived after winning its last two matches, leapfrogging Vissel Kobe out of the drop zone.
