Favourite Ghurair came out on top in a battle with Havana Gold to claim the 500-thousand pounds (sterling) Tattersalls Millions 2-year-old Trophy at Newmarket, on Saturday.

    Script:

A beautiful autumn day at Newmarket for the Tattersalls Millions 2-year-old Trophy ...

Fifth when last seen in the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, the twice-raced Ghurair was sent off as the 7-4 favourite.

Paul Hanagan's mount was soon prominent as the field raced down the centre of the track.

Quickening to lead at the two-furlong marker, Hanagan's mount hauled in long-time leader, Race And Status.

Richard Hughes soon joined the battle on market rival Havana Gold, the winner of a Group Three race last time out.

The pair settled down to fight it out but the John Gosden-trained Ghurair kept pulling out more for Hanagan and shaded the verdict by a head - the front two pulling clear of Race And Status, in third.

The win saw Gosden move further clear of Aidan O'Brien in the race to win the trainers' championship.
