On their return home they were greeted by Mexican president, Felipe Calderon, who declared that the athletes were a source of pride for their nation.

SOUNBITE (Spanish) Mexican President Felipe Calderon
"Congratulations on your efforts, on your commitment, on your passion, and for defending with courage the colours of our country and exalting Mexico's name, as we asked of you."

Thousands of fans took the streets to celebrate as Mexico defeated favourites Brazil to win the country's first gold medal in football.

It will be a difficult challenge to defend that title in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
