Palestinian swimmers fly the flag

  • Intro:

Swimmers Sabine Hazboune and Ahmed Gebrel are aiming to claim Palestine's first Olympic medal.

    Script:

Sabine Hazboune and Ahmed Gebrel form part of the five member Palestinian team that will compete at the Olympic Games.

The swimmers have been training in Barcelona for months with the aim of securing a first Olympic medal for Palestine.

Very few athletes may be representing Palestine in London but Ahmed Gebrel believes the Games will have an impact on sport back home.

SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Ahmed Gebrel, Palestinian swimmer
"We are a small number yes, but hopefully after the Olympics we will have more people involved in sports. I hope the five of us will be up to the task and represent Palestine in the best possible way. For me we are really good and we really deserve to be there and God willing we will do ok"

Palestine first participated in the Olympics in the Atlanta Games of 1996.

16 years on, Gebrel and Hazboune are searching for their nation's medal breakthrough.

If either of the duo, or even both of them succeed, it would be a hugely symbolic event for Palestine.
