105 competitors from around the world battled it out in round two of the Modern Pentathlon World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Sunday.

In the first of the five disciplines - the men competed for three hours in the fencing competition.

The world number one, Aleksander Lesun of Russia defeated Kazahkstan's Pavel Iliashenko.

Next was the 200 metre freestyle with Polands young star, Remi Golis, showing his pace in the pool to beat Great Britain's Nick Woodbridge.

The athletes next turned their attentions to the riding. This has historically been Lesun's worst event but he put those problems behind him knocking down only one of the 12 fences down for a promising round.

The Russian finished the event in 19th place. However Lesun's coach - famous Russian Pentathlete, Alexei Kaplanov, was less than pleased with his athlete's performance and they were seen involved in a heated exchange.

After the first three competitions, the athletes' total scores are converted into a time handicap, which determines the starting times for the combined running and shooting, where athletes run a short distance to the shooting range and aim to hit a target five times in 70 seconds.

Lesun lead going into the last event by 16 seconds over his nearest rival Egypt's Omar El Geziry with nine other athletes in close pursuit.

With Lesun all but assured the victory the contest for second place really heated up with 2010 World Champion Serguei Karyakinlead the charge for the silver medal.

But Italy's speedster Riccardo de Luca had other ideas and moved from 18th position into 2nd position before a dramatic sprint in the last 100 metres by Karyakin secured the Russian the silver medal.
