BOA 'cautiously optimistic' over drugs ban

Tuesday, March 13 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Great Britain's attempt to keep drug cheats out of its Olympic team reached world sport's top court on Monday (12th March), less than five months before the London Games.

No other country enforces lifetime bans for dopers and the British Olympic Association (BOA) on Monday challenged the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) assertion that its code is now violated by the 20-year-old sanction.

If the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) adjudicates in favour of WADA, sprinter Dwain Chambers and cyclist David Millar will become eligible to compete on home soil this summer.

SOUNDBITE (English) Colin Moynihan, British Olympic Association chairman:

"Yeah, it was a really good day, long day, but all the arguments were put really strongly, the voice of the athletes was definitely heard, and we now wait and see."

(Question: How important is it to get a quick resolution so that everyone can move on?)

"We'd really like a quick one. One of the questions that we've put is to try and get a decision as soon as possible, and my expectation is about a month. But we don't want it any longer, it's in the interests of the athletes that they know exactly when the outcome will be. But today was good. Today was good work, outstanding legal representation, and Lord (David) Panick (lead lawyer) was really first rate. And above all, as I've said, the voice of the athletes came over strong and loud - they were listened to today - so I'm cautiously optimistic. Thank you very much."

SOUNDBITE (English) Colin Moynihan, British Olympic Association chairman:

"Overwhelmingly the athletes in winter sports and summer sports, for the last twenty years since this selection policy was put in place, have voted to ensure that we take a tough line against those who have knowingly cheated - the worst of the drug offenders in sport. So I would be, obviously, disappointed if we didn't win because we've fought very hard to represent the interests of those athletes."
