Ashton Eaton: I knew "I could break the world record"

Sunday, March 11 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

American Ashton Eaton set a new world record in winning the men's heptathlon title at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul on Saturday.

Eaton improved his own record by 77 points over the two days of competition, finishing a massive 574 points ahead of Ukraine's Oleksiy Kasyanov, and he was delighted when he spoke to SNTV afterwards - as was Valerie Adams, the women's shot put winner from New Zealand.

Also sharing thoughts in front of the cameras in Instanbul were Sanya Richards-Ross of the USA who won the 400 metres; Australia's Sally Pearson who added the indoor world title to her outdoor crown with a dominant win in the 60-metre hurdles; and American Justin Gatlin who stormed to victory in 6.46 seconds as the men's 60-metre final completed the second day's action.

SOUNDBITE (English): Ashton Eaton, heptathlon winner:

"It feels good and coming into the competition I knew if I was healthy and I felt good and my marks you know I could break the world record…(reporter asking question)…Yes I was maybe a little bit……(reporter asking question)...The competition was solid and everything was good and I really had no bad events……(reporter asking question)…this is good to lead into the games and to our US trials which you know is very competitive, we have Brian Clay, Trey Hardy, this is good beginning to the season."

SOUNDBITE (English): Valerie Adams, women's shot put winner:

"I felt pretty good, probably a little bit nervous obviously. There's always a lot of competition from the Americans, Chinese. You can never underestimate anybody but I am happy with the win tonight…(reporter asks question) It's good you know, it's going good so far. I've won all my competitions, I'm back here based in Switzerland for the rest of the year and I'm looking forward to a lot of hard work but you know I'm going to go to the Olympics in the best shape possible. Great, thank you, cheers. "

SOUNDBITE (English): Sally Pearson, 60 metres hurdles winner:

"Oh really excited and I just can't believe it. It's such a relief to be finished and to be the world champion, again… (Reporter asks a question) Yeah, exactly I felt the pressure but I knew that I was in good shape and I knew that I was ready… (reporter asks a question) It means that I'm in fantastic shape and that everything is going to go, hopefully, smoothly towards the Olympic Games when I win a gold… (reporter asks a question) The semi finals were horrible for me, I was very disappointed but I knew that I was going to be fired up for that final. I wasn't going to let anything stop me tonight."

SOUNDBITE (English): Justin Gatlin, 60 metres winner:

"I think it was really good. I came in here dominating the races and I wanted to finish off like that.

Grabbed the gold medal and I'm going for the Olympics now. … (reporter asks a question) You know it's been a little shaky competition here with the gun and going from a hot warm up area to the cold and coming back to a hot track here. You know, also you have to make sure you keep your confidence and come out here and keep your mind right."

SOUNDBITE (English): Sanya Richards-Ross, 400 metres winner:

"Yes I felt really good at my race today, I was a little bit tired from yesterday's two rounds but once I come out and compete well and I felt like I did that…I think I am going to be ready for Olympics this year, great shape, I feel strong, didn't skip my training much for the indoor season so I hope I will have my best season yet."
