Ousmane Dembele will look to quit Barcelona in January after seeing his move to Manchester United collapse.
Barcelona did agree a loan deal with United to send the France international to Old Trafford.
However, despite the two clubs settling on a substantial loan fee and United paying his wages, Dembele’s contract stance got in the way.
Barcelona asked him to sign a contract extension until 2023 to help ensure his value did not drop after this season.
The 23-year-old refused in order to not tie himself down to the club further where he is clearly not wanted.
Manchester United target Ousmane Dembele could quit Barcelona in January still
His current deal runs until 2022, meaning he would have just 12 months left on his contract if he left Barcelona on a straight loan this term.
Dembele’s stay meant Barcelona were ultimately blocked from signing Memphis Depay from Lyon too, as La Liga stepped in due to the club’s financial situation.
Hope is not over for Dembele, though, as the Daily Mail say he will now look to leave in January.
That offers United another chance to take him away from the Nou Camp, especially as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not get the right winger he was looking for.
Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho proved out of reach, so a fresh approach for Dembele could be on the cards.
A lot will likely depend on how the next few months plays out for Dembele in Catalonia before the window reopens.
Ronald Koeman will need Dembele as the season goes on, having not teamed up with compatriot Depay.
