Arsenal starlet Gabriel Martinelli has signed a new long-term contract with the club after a highly impressive first season with the club.

The news comes exactly one year to the day since he joined the north London side.

Martinelli joined Arsenal from Brazilian second tier side Ituano for a fairly modest £6m last summer.

But the 19-year-old has gone on to score 10 goals in all competitions this term, with three of those coming in the Premier League.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta revealed his delight upon the announcement of the news, admitting there were a number of factors that convinced him Martinelli should be handed a new deal.

The Spaniard said: "I am very happy that Gabi has signed a new contract with us.

“He is a very talented young player and he has impressed us with his performances, attitude and work-rate.

“We are looking forward to getting him back to full fitness and to watching his development at our club."

Arsenal recently handed a new long-term deal to Bukayo Saka amid reports that he may have been looking to leave the club.

Arsenal's technical director Edu spoke about handing new deals to Martinelli and Saka.

“It's two young players, but different cases. Bukayo came through the academy and I think we did the right process with him - 100 per cent right,” he said.

“Martinelli is a young player, different process but a very nice case as well.

“We bought Martinelli when he was 17, he didn't come from the academy, but we planned with him to start with our under-23s and then, because he's such a talented player in the pre-season he proved how he could be in the first team, as with Bukayo.

“Be on the bench, training with the first team to be in the squad, then he proved as well to be an important player as well so it's two different cases but we are really, really happy to have the possibility to renew and to be with them for a much longer period.”

Martinelli is expected to miss the rest of the current season with a knee injury. The Brazilian has undergone surgery for the issue.
