Bernd Leno was forced off with a serious-looking injury during Arsenal's clash with Brighton.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea sent his best wishes to Arsenal counterpart Bernd Leno after the German suffered a serious knee injury.

In a poor season for the club, Leno has been one of Arsenal's best performers, making numerous saves.

But Leno's season is set to come to an abrupt end after an awful moment for the goalkeeper.

Leno came out of his goal to collect a high ball and Maupay leaned into the goalkeeper to try and get him to carry the ball out the box.

But Leno landed awkwardly and was in immediate distress as the medical team attended to him.

As Leno was stretchered off, he berated Maupay for his part in the incident.

On Twitter, De Gea sent a message to Leno saying: "Stay Strong".

Speaking on BT Sport, pundit Rio Ferdinand defended Maupay's role in the incident.

"No you can't blame Maupay," Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

"He would have felt worse in training, if not in the warm-up, it's a contact sport.

"It's a foul, he's leaning into him but it's not malicious and it's not with excessive force. Come on.

"It's a very unfortunate, very nasty injury and obviously Leno will be distraught, he's been an ever-present for Arsenal.

"It's difficult, I think Maupay obviously will sit there and look at it and think 'maybe I didn't need to go in for that but again this is a contact sport.

"People are going to try and jostle, try and get an advantage, he tried to ease him out of the box.

"Yes he got injured but he didn't go in there with those intentions I don't believe. Listen, if I'm a player and I'm playing for Brighton, I want my striker doing that."

While former Tottenham and Liverpool striker Peter Crouch called Maupay's challenge 'naughty'.

"Yeah I think he's left a bit on him there," Crouch said.

"I've been in that position myself where you're a little bit frustrated, the ball's got away from you and you just leave a bit on the keeper.

"I think that's what he's done there, he's been a little bit naughty in my opinion but he's not meant to injure him, he's not meant to do him any harm. That's just unfortunate."
