Beckham: Messi is unique, Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't get to his level

David Beckham has weighed in on the debate as to who is better between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, opting for Barcelona's Argentine superstar.

The pair have dominated individual award for over a decade, winning 11 Ballons d'Ors between them, though both now are coming to the end of their careers.

"Messi is alone in his class as a player, it's impossible that there is someone else like him," Beckham told Argentine news agency Telam. "As a player and there is no other like him.

"He, like Ronaldo, who doesn't reach his level, are above the rest.

"They may have similarities in technique and talent. It is amazing for football to have them both playing at the same time.

"But Messi is simply the best player in the world."

While Ronaldo followed Beckham at Manchester United and then Real Madrid, they never faced each other in competition, but the Englishman did have the pleasure of sharing a pitch with Messi when at PSG in 2013.
