Man United & Man City both interested in signing Dayot Upamecano – Sky

Upamecano impressing with Leipzig

Dayot Upamecano has been on RB Leipzig's books since January of 2017.

The Frenchman joined the Bundesliga outfit from RB Salzburg for a fee believed to be around £9m.

Since moving to Leipzig, Upamecano has racked up just over 100 appearances across all competitions at club level.

The ball-playing defender, who is just 21 years of age, has enjoyed a particularly fruitful 2019/20 campaign.

Before the season was curtailed due to COVID-19, Upamecano garnered 21 league appearances for Leipzig, only missing a handful of games at the start of the campaign due to injury.

In said games, Upamecano had helped guide Leipzig to 3rd in the German top-flight. Julian Nagelsmann's men also currently boast the joint-best defence in the Bundesliga, alongside leaders Bayern Munich.

Upamecano to the Premier League?

As such, amid his impressive stint in Germany, Upamecano appears to be attracting interest from some of Europe's heavy hitters.

According to Sky Sports News, both Manchester United and Manchester City are interested in signing the France under-21 international.

The Manchester clubs targeting Upamecano does make a fair bit of sense, as both look as though they could do with some defensive reinforcements.

Outside of Harry Maguire, United have very little quality at centre-half. As for Man City, they didn't replace Vincent Kompany last summer, and Aymeric Laporte's injury woes this term have showcased their lack of depth/quality at centre-back.

Upamecano's contract is said to contain a release clause of €60m. However, he has only just over a year left on his current Leipzig terms, as per the report from Sky.

While United and City are indeed keeping an eye on the centre-back, Sky also report that talks are at a very early stage, and interest is not yet concrete, especially due to the ongoing financial uncertainty in football brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
