UEFA president Ceferin: 'I can't see a way Liverpool could be left without PL title'

Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA, has this evening moved to reassure any concerned Liverpool fans that their side look set to lift the Premier League title 'one way or another'.

Liverpool's title charge halted

Following widespread calls for action to be taken, it was finally announced early last month that all fixtures across the English football calendar had been postponed.

This came less than 24 hours after confirmation arrived that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had tested positive for COVID-19.

The Premier League followed the likes of Serie A and La Liga in calling a halt to domestic proceedings, as the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc on the sporting calendar worldwide.

Unlike in the likes of Italy and Spain, however, where tightly-contested title races were well underway, the destination of the title in England's top-tier had been clear for some time before the decision was taken to postpone all fixtures moving forward.

Liverpool's hefty 25-point lead atop the Premier League table meant that Jurgen Klopp's men were actually just two wins away from clinching their first league title in 30 years.

As such, while the COVID-19 outbreak of course resulted in clubs across England taking a major hit, it was perhaps the Reds who were left feeling most aggrieved by the timing of the pandemic.

'Maintain the integrity of each competition'

A further announcement on plans for the remainder of the Premier League season, though, was forthcoming this past weekend.

While it was confirmed that a return will not be sanctioned until a date when it is considered 'safe and appropriate to do so', crucially, it was also added that:

'With this, there is a combined objective for all remaining domestic league and cup matches to be played, enabling us to maintain the integrity of each competition.'

As such, as things stand, there appears to be a clear willingness on the part of the Premier League's clubs to see out the remaining weeks of the campaign.

This of course comes as a major boost for champions-elect Liverpool.

'Can't see a way'

And, as outlined above, any fears that may have nevertheless remained on the part of the Reds faithful have today been all-but dispelled, by a high-profile source.

Speaking in an interview with EkipaSN, a newspaper in his home country of Slovenia, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin claimed that there is essentially no course of action which could be taken that would deny Jurgen Klopp's men the Premier League title:

'I can't see a way Liverpool could be left without a title. Theoretically it's not all over, but practically Liverpool are on the verge of it.'

'If it could not be played, it would still be necessary to announce the results in some way and then the champions should be determined.'

'And of course, again I do not see a scenario in which that would not be Liverpool. I understand that fans will be disappointed if it happens in an empty stadium or even at a table, but I believe they will win the title in one way or another.' As quoted by the Independent.
