Premier League clubs want to scrap the Premier League season and deny Liverpool the title.

A growing number of Premier League clubs are calling for the season to be ended with immediate effect - even if it denies Liverpool a first English top-flight title in 30 years.

The worldwide coronavirus pandemic has seen the UK placed on lockdown and no football will be played before April 30 at the very earliest.

There is a worry that the season may not resume until much deeper into the summer, especially as Euro 2020 has been postponed by 12 months to allow domestic football to take place.

UEFA have insisted all of their major leagues must be concluded by June 30 to ensure there is no impact on the following campaign.

But the FA have changed their rules to allow clubs to play on beyond that date if they deem it necessary to do so.

However, there comes the major caveat. What may benefit one club may not benefit another.

According to the Athletic, more clubs are favouring the option of ending the season now over playing it behind closed doors.

A high ranking official at another Premier League club does not think the entire league should cater for Liverpool - who are 25 points clear at the top of the table.

"I’m hoping the situation changes by then but unfortunately, the world is changing and it’s changing for the worse every day," they said.

"It’s absolutely clear what is going to happen. It’s a worldwide pandemic. You just start (the Premier League season) again and there are very few losers.

"Liverpool, I know. But in the grand scheme of things, honestly, it really doesn’t matter. You’ve just got to start again.

"This (COVID-19) is going to get worse here (in Britain), so it’s not about players returning to training. If we all stay at home and self-isolate for the next two, three months, we’re going to get through this quite simply.

"But even then, there’s going to be a period of slow reintegration into normality, otherwise the virus will spike again. So, if we’re lucky, the new season will start in September.

"If they want to say, ‘This season is over and it will be recommencing with the final nine games being played out in September’, fantastic.

"But if that’s not feasible. Just end this league with whatever consequences that has. End it and say the new league will start in September.

"We look like petulant, ridiculous children now. I passionately believe what we’re doing is wrong. And I would like to think my colleagues now believe that as well, that the world has changed. It’s a scary place at the moment and we’ve got to treat it seriously."

Meanwhile, an unnamed Premier League club's chairman insists there will be several problems, including an increased stress on the NHS, if football resumes before the coronavirus curve has been flattened.

"How can you play a contact sport that could result in injury and a highly-paid, highly-privileged individual having to go to hospital to be fixed, placing an even greater burden on the hospital system at a time when the virus is escalating?" they said.

"I just find it so insulting that we’re even talking this way; it’s just not important.

"If we start playing behind closed doors, can you guarantee you’re not going to have thousands of people turning up outside (the stadiums)? It’s absurd. Forget the practicalities of it. I just find the whole proposition insulting. That people are on ventilators dying and yet we’re playing a game. I’m baffled by it.

"Even in good times, what we do is full of self-importance. It’s just a game of football."

It is said 14 of the 20 Premier League clubs need to agree on the same solution for the Premier League to implement the decision.

And a third club chief has warned that they must come to a resolution regardless of how it affects Liverpool.

"The position we’re taking is ridiculous," they said. "There are such bigger issues to deal with yet every question is, ‘Will Liverpool be champions?’.

"It really just doesn’t matter. In world history, this will be recorded as a very challenging time. There is a place for football and entertainment but that’s in a time when there are no troubles and there are no major issues that need to be dealt with.

"At a recent meeting, one club said, ‘Listen, I’m going to let my players go on holiday but if they get stuck because the situation changes, do you think the government will send private planes over to get them so they can play football?’. This is how disconnected and ludicrous they are."
