There is not much attention paid to Belarusian Premier League before, and most punters have not much knowledge about it, except for the encounter of the name of BATE Borisov in UCL or UEL. However, in the current special period, Belarusian Premier League can be regarded as one of the most high-profile competitions worldwide. In order to let our 7M users get to know this league more quickly and intuitively, today we will briefly give a general overview of the history, the key teams and the characteristics of placing stakes in this league.

Belarusian Premier League

Established in 1992, Belarusian Premier League is currently the top league in Belarus. The participants have been varying between 14 and 16 teams, and now it settles down in 16 teams. The league runs with a double round-robin system. The winner of a league game will get 3 points, while the loser will receive none. If a game ends with a draw, both sides will grab 1 point respectively. Rankings will be decided on accumulated points at the end of the season. If teams are level on points, tie-breakers are applied in the following order: wins, head-to-head records, goal difference and total goals scored. The 1st-ranked team will qualify for the UCL next season, while the 2nd and 3rd-placed teams will make into the UEL. The bottom 2 sides will be automatically relegated, while the bottom 3rd team will play 2-leg promotion-relegation play-offs with the 3rd-ranked side of the Belarusian First League, the 2nd division of Belarusian football. In the past 2019 season, the bottom 3rd Dnepr Mogilev were relegated after losing to FK Ruh Brest on penalty shoot-out. In this case, there are 3 newly-promoted teams this season in Belarusian Premier League, which are the Belarusian First League champions FC Belshina Babruisk, the runners-up Smolevichi and FK Ruh Brest.

Looking back at the history of the champions of Belarusian Premier League, it is somewhat similar to the history of the champions of Chinese league. The Chinese league is roughly divided into the Dalian dynasty, the Evergrande dynasty, and the period of "chaos" between these two dynasties. As for Belarusian Premier League, it is divided into the Dinamo Minsk dynasty at the beginning of its establishment, the period of ten years in full bloom for all clubs and the dominance of BATE Borisov since 2006.

Dinamo Minsk

Dinamo Minsk were the champions of the first year of Belarusian Premier League, and they went on to defend the title for 4 successive seasons, thus achieving 5 consecutive triumphs. Since the 1996 season, Dinamo Minsk’s winning streak was ended, and no team ever defended the league title for the following 10 years. There were 8 different teams lifting the trophy during this period. In 2006, the BATE Borisov dynasty stepped onto the historical stage, when they claimed their 3rd league title in their history. From then on to the year 2018, BATE Borisov achieved stunning 13 successive triumphs in the league, during which period the established powerhouses Dinamo Minsk and Shakhter Soligorsk once tried to challenge BATE Borisov for years, but both failed in vain.

In the last season, Dinamo Brest were the newly-rising force. They grabbed 75 points from 30 league fixtures and they finally were crowned the league champions over BATE Borisov with only 70 points, which ended BATE Borisov’s 13-year dominance for the domestic league.

In terms of the overall performance in the past few years, there are 3 traditional powerhouses in Belarusian Premier League, which are BATE Borisov, Dinamo Minsk and Shakhter Soligorsk. And it still will take time to see if the new champions Dinamo Brest are just a flash in the pan.

Team with good offensive quality: BATE Borisov, but their offensive advantages have been narrowed

One of the biggest reasons for BATE Borisov’s long-term dominance for the league title is their top quality in offensive end. From the 2016 to 2018 season, they have been the team with most goals scored in the league. But actually their gap with the 2nd best attacking team has been narrowed. In 2016 season, BATE Borisov scored 24 more goals than team with the 2nd most goals scored (73:49), but they only netted 3 more goals in 2018 season (55:52). And then, in the last season when they lost the title, they even scored nearly 10 fewer goals than the final champions Dinamo Brest. So to a certain extent, the team with the best attacking power have the strongest competitiveness for the league title.

Team with good defensive quality: Solid defense keeps Shakhter Soligorsk competitive

As one of the 3 powerhouses in Belarusian Premier League, Shakhter Soligorsk are the last team to lift the league trophy before BATE Borisov’s 13-year dominance. And they have been challenging BATE Borisov for the following 13 years. The most important point for their solid records is undoubtedly their solid defense. They can be regarded as the team with the best defensive quality, with less than 1 goal conceded in each of the last 4 seasons. During the past 4 years, they have been one of the 3 teams with the fewest goals conceded. In 2016, 2018 and 2019 season, they are the team with the best defensive quality in the league. It can be said that the goal of Shakhter Soligorsk is the most difficult place to conquer for the whole Belarusian Premier League.
