David Flitcroft pleased with Bolton’s performance in draw against Burton

Bolton assistant manager David Flitcroft was pleased with the effort of his side as they picked up a point for the third successive game with a 2-2 draw at Burton.

The Trotters are winless in eight League One fixtures but a run of three games without defeat has boosted the mood at the club, who are 21 points adrift of safety with 12 matches to play.

They could have been celebrating a rare victory after taking the lead twice at Burton through Ryan Delaney and Ethan Hamilton, only for Jamie Murphy to equalise twice.

But they had done enough to earn praise from Flitcroft.

“Building off the last two performances and the clean sheets, we expressed ourselves – particularly in the first half – and even though we conceded two goals there was an energy and a verve going forwards,” he said.

“After the last two clean sheets I am really disappointed with the goal that we conceded from the corner; we have been really good on set plays. That aside there was a dig and a drive about the performance tonight and a real honesty out there.”

Flitcroft reserved special praise for Ali Crawford, who had a hand in both of Bolton’s goals.

“Ali Crawford is different to what we have got,” said Flitcroft. “You can see that quality and that feel and touch that he has got. It is a great set-up for Ethan’s goal and he has put a great ball in for Joe Dodoo late on as well.”

Burton boss Nigel Clough was left to reflect on defensive errors as he saw his side score twice but fail to win for the second time in four days.

“We got plenty of effort again in a good, open game – a bit too open at times – and the usual problem of conceding two poor goals that stops us winning the game,” he said.

“But having gone behind twice at home, to come back and get a draw and score another two goals – that is 50 we have scored for the season which is not bad going but unfortunately we have conceded 50 and that is the problem.”

Clough had to rely on January loan signing Murphy to twice dig his side out of trouble and the Brewers boss was pleased to see the ex-Sheffield United player continue his run of scoring form.

“I think that is seven for him now (in 10 appearances), which is a brilliant return for him,” Clough said. “I think Scott Fraser’s effort was going in as well in the 89th minute but it was deflected wide.

“We had a lot of good situations again but didn’t quite make the most of them.”
