Derek Adams disappointed as Morecambe lose two-goal lead in Carlisle draw

Morecambe manager Derek Adams was disappointed that his side were unable to hold on to a two-goal lead, but a 2-2 draw against Carlisle at a stormy Brunton Park took his side a step further towards Sky Bet League Two safety.

First-half goals by former Carlisle striker Cole Stockton and Aaron Wildig preceded Carlisle’s opener by Omari Patrick on the stroke of half-time.

Aaron Hayden’s header, from an Elliot Watt corner to the far post, provided Carlisle with their equaliser.

Adams said: “The way we started, going 2-0 up, put us in a great position, but Carlisle scored their first at the right time.

“We would have taken a point before the game, but we should have been able to go on and win it. We started very well and created a number of good chances.

“We would have like three points which would have cut the gap between us and Carlisle, but we’ve moved up a position.

“One of our defenders lost his man for the goal.”

However the Morecambe boss was enthused with both his side’s goals, adding: “Cole got a great goal and it was a fabulous strike from Aaron.

“I felt we were the better side in the first half but the goal just before half-time gave Carlisle belief and they took the game to us in the second half.”

Morecambe goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi was kept busy in the early exchanges, fielding a curling Nathan Thomas free-kick from a dangerous position on the right of the penalty area then grabbing Hayden’s bundled effort under the bar.

The visitors had the blustery wind to contend with, but they went ahead in the 18th minute when Jordan Cranston’s pass found Stockton just inside the area.

The Carlisle goalkeeper was beaten again five minutes later when the defence could only clear as far as Wildig who, from 20 yards, lashed a stunning volley into the top corner.

Carlisle were in desperate need a response before the break and they got it in the final moments of the first half when Patrick seized on a ball on the left and fired in a shot from the edge of the box then Hayden’s header the final outcome into the balance.

Carlisle head coach Chris Beech said: “We gave ourselves a lot to do. If you start a race 20 yards behind you have got to go really fast to get the gold medal.”

Beech is still not totally convinced his side are safe from the threat of relegation, but he said: “After going two goals down, I am very pleased with the response.

“I thought we started better than Morecambe but found ourselves two down. I was disappointed with the goals which were both avoidable.

“The first goal was from a free cross and the second was a good strike, but it came after a bit of chaos which was avoidable.”

However the Carlisle boss added: “We have gained a little bit on the bottom clubs and not really got what we deserved, but the wins will come.

“The effort of the players was excellent and it was a great comeback, but we want to win. In the second half we attacked so much, barring unforced errors, there was nothing going on in our half.

“Omari’s goal was Premier League class. He has pace, he’s deceptively quick and has some skill.”
