Sunderland will be without Bailey Wright for the visit of Bristol Rovers with the defender ruled out for the rest of the season.
The centre-half, who arrived on loan from Bristol City last month, damaged ankle ligaments in last week’s win at Oxford.
Fellow central defender Joel Lynch returned to training this week following bruised ribs, while Alim Ozturk is also in contention to step in for Wright.
Forward Chris Maguire recovered from a dead leg in time to start at Oxford, while boss Phil Parkinson has no other new injury concerns.
Rovers boss Ben Garner has no new injury concerns following his first win in charge of the club against Blackpool last week.
Defenders Tareiq Holmes-Dennis and Rollin Menayese, plus midfielder Cam Hargreaves are all pushing for recalls after appearing for the under-23s this week.
Right-back Josh Hare also played for the under-23s and is edging closer to his return following a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Cian Harries and James Daly (ankle) have yet to appear for the Pirates after arriving on loan last month and will be hoping to feature.
