Fernandes - wearing a black Homer Simpson T-shirt - beamed at the camera as he was snapped alongside his agent on his private jet.

He was then transported to United's regular pre-match haunt The Lowry hotel, where he will spend the night before undergoing his medical examinations on Thursday.

Man Utd had earlier confirmed January's longest transfer saga was finally over.

A club statement read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Sporting Clube de Portugal for the transfer of Bruno Fernandes.

"The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms.

"A further announcement will be made in due course."

That was then followed by Sporting posting a thank you message to the star in a farewell video on Twitter.

Sporting had been holding out for £68m up front with United only originally offering £42.5m plus £8.5m add ons.

Now a breakthrough has been reached that could lead to the Red Devils eventually paying just under that £68m figure in full.

United will cough up £46.6m up front plus £4.2m based on appearances and a further £4.2m if they qualify for the Champions League.

There is also a further £12.7m on offer should Fernandes to win the Ballon D'Or and help take United to Champions League glory.

The 25-year-old has agreed in principle to a four-and-a-half year contract with the option on the club's side to extend that by a further year.

The playmaker has already scored 15 goals from 28 appearances this season, as well as providing 14 assists, with United in desperate need of a player with his goal return and creative spark.

Should he finalise his move in time ahead of tomorrow afternoon's deadline, Solskjaer may be able to call on his services this weekend.

Wolves head to Old Trafford level on points with United in a crunch match for both teams' hopes of finishing in the top four.
