Alex Fisher sends Exeter through to round two

Exeter overcame Cambridge courtesy of Alex Fisher’s second goal for the club in a 1-0 win to set up an FA Cup second-round clash at home to Hartlepool on December 1.
Exeter’s game against Cheltenham on Saturday finished goalless and was devoid of many chances but if that was bad, the first 45 minutes against a Cambridge side without 10 players was even worse.
Only once was either goalkeeper called into action and that was when Cambridge’s Callum Burton collected a Randell Williams free-kick that was slightly too high and would have crept in at the far post had the keeper not intervened.
Lee Martin fired straight at Burton on 57 minutes which led to Exeter fans cheering and singing: “We’ve had a shot” and Nicky Law was also off target from distance.
Williams forced Burton into his first meaningful save, with a vicious free-kick, but the deadlock was finally broken on 71 minutes when substitute Ben Seymour pulled the ball back for Fisher to lash home from close range.
Burton saved again from Williams as Exeter saw the game out comfortably with Cambridge’s only effort on goal a Liam O’Neil shot that went wide of the post.
