Rotherham without three defenders for Accrington clash

Rotherham boss Paul Warne will be without three of his more experienced defenders in Richard Wood, Joe Mattock and Trevor Clarke for the Sky Bet League One clash with Accrington at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Mattock will miss his third game through injury, while Wood pulled up 37 minutes into last week’s 3-1 FA Cup first-round win at Maidenhead and is also sidelined, while Clarke has an ankle knock.

Midfielder Jamie Lindsay, who missed that match for personal reasons, returned for the 3-0 EFL Trophy defeat at Lincoln in midweek, and will retain his place.

Defenders Adam Thompson and Clark Robertson have both gained valuable minutes in the last two games on their returns to full fitness and will compete for places.

Accrington have defensive problems of their own as they are without the experience of Mark Hughes, who was sent off in the 2-0 FA Cup first-round defeat at home to Crewe.

Although the Red appealed against the dismissal, the straight red card was upheld, meaning Hughes will now start a three-match ban.

Another defender in Aji Alese is on international duty with the England Under-19s, while Zaine Francis Angol remains injured. Back-up goalkeeper Joe Bursik is with the England Under-20s.

On-loan Swansea forward Courtney Baker-Richardson is also sidelined with a thigh injury that previously sidelined him for two months.
