Maidenhead boss Devonshire proud despite FA Cup defeat

Maidenhead boss Alan Devonshire was proud with his side’s performance despite being knocked out of the FA Cup in a 3-1 defeat by League One’s Rotherham.

The National League outfit had led for 44 minutes after Jake Cassidy’s opener and were threatening a famous upset.

However, goals from Michael Ihiekwe, Freddie Lapado and Matt Crooks ended Maidenhead’s dreams – but Devonshire was delighted with his team’s efforts nonetheless.

“I’m really proud of my players,” he said.

“We came up against a very good League One side, who were playing Championship football last season.

“It’d be interesting to see what would have happened if didn’t go down to 10 men but we did and that’s football.

“Hopefully this performance can be a catalyst for us.”

The visitors had to wait 69 minutes to eventually spare their blushes but manager Paul Warne was impressed by his side’s resilience.

He said: “We’re delighted to be through.

“Every credit to Maidenhead. They got the lead and defended well. In the end our quality won through.

“We showed great patience to keep plugging away. We could have panicked, but we didn’t.

“We stuck to the task at hand and got the job done. It was a really professional performance in the end.”
