Paul Rutherford helps Wrexham start life after Bryan Hughes with a victory

Paul Rutherford netted the winner as Wrexham started life after Bryan Hughes by ending their eight-match winless run with a 1-0 victory over Ebbsfleet.
The Welsh side, under the guidance of interim boss Brian Flynn following Thursday’s departure of Hughes, looked like paying for a missed penalty until Rutherford struck in the 63rd minute.
Wrexham had more of the ball before the interval but Ebbsfleet defended well, restricting the hosts to few opportunities.
The best first-half chance came in the 16th minute, when Jazzi Barnum-Bobb advanced powerfully and found Mark Harris, who shot narrowly past the Ebbsfleet goal.
The hosts were awarded a penalty just past the hour mark for an apparent shirt pull by Ayo Obileye. However, Bobby Grant’s spot-kick was saved by goalkeeper Jordan Holmes.
Wrexham had not won since August 13 and the run was set to continue, but winger Rutherford received possession from JJ Hooper and shot high past Holmes.
