Why Man Utd didn’t sign Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United didn’t sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon this summer. And, now, the reason has been revealed.

Manchester United were linked with Fernandes for most of the summer. He was the name hot on the lips of everybody but, like Wesley Sneijder and Nicolas Gaitan in previous years, there was never anything truly in it.

The Red Devils were understood to be angry at the constant links to the Sporting star, believing the Portuguese giants to be using the speculation to drive the player’s price up.

Manchester United fans were crying out for Fernandes to arrive on transfer deadline day but 5pm came and went without the player arriving.

And the Mirror say United didn’t go for the 24-year-old because they thought he gave away the ball too often.

Last season, Fernandes was in blistering form for his club.

The Sporting star hit 31 goals across all competitions as the team finished behind Benfica and Porto in the Primeira Liga table.

"He has given me the confidence I will do well. I am ready for a new challenge and chapter in my life. I always had that youngster tag at Arsenal, so hopefully with this move I am able to make a name for myself in the Premier League and create history with Everton.

"Hopefully I will be able to take on a bit more responsibility and add something to the team as well."

Liverpool transfer strategy questioned

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp should have signed a striker this summer and failing to do means he may have missed a trick.

That’s the verdict of Steve McClaren, who touched upon the strategy of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

He told Sky Sports News: “Sir Alex Ferguson always said at United, at the end of every signing we've won something, there's going to be one or two coming into that dressing room that makes the players sit up and go, ‘Wow, we're going onto another level.’

"That's the only thing that worries me. They didn't go on and get another star striker and players are now playing around the clock 12 months of the year."
