Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman will stop at nothing to land the England centre-back — who has been told he can expect a five-year deal worth £350,000-a-week.

Leicester are holding out for a world-record fee for a defender — and add-ons could take United to the price they want for the 26-year-old.

The Red Devils could throw Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo into the deal if Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is prepared to accept a part-exchange.

United also have an ace in the pack in their bid to snap up Maguire.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s No 2, Mike Phelan, gave Maguire his first Premier League break when he was boss of Hull.

Phelan also made him club captain in the 2016-17 season before they went down and he left for the Foxes.

The pair still have a good relationship and United hope that will figure in any decision to switch - with Manchester City also chasing the defender.

It is understood Maguire has not asked for a move from the club that bought him for £17m from Hull two years ago.

But it will be made clear to him that Phelan sees him as just as important to United as Virgil van Dijk is to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool have not looked back since Van Dijk arrived from Southampton for £75m 18 months ago.

He is currently the most expensive defender ever, although that could change soon.

West Ham centre-back Issa Diop is also on United’s shortlist.
