Steven Pressley disappointed Carlisle failed to make League Two play-offs

Carlisle manager Steven Pressley admits that he is disappointed that his team could not sneak into the League Two play-offs.

Going into their final game of the season at Yeovil, the Cumbrians had an outside shot of making the top six, but needed to win and hope other results went their way.

The goalless draw at Huish Park was not enough – although it did not matter anyway as Newport got the point they needed at Morecambe.

“We’re disappointed because we genuinely believed we could do it,” said Pressley. “But I suppose consistency of results has reflected that.

“We’ve had some terrific results and some disappointing results and if you are going to gain promotion consistency is the key word and we just haven’t quite managed to show that.

“We were obviously aware of other results. We needed the Gods to be shining down on us today. It didn’t seem to happen.

“I didn’t tell them the results at half-time and they continued to push and probe.

“I’ve got to say I thought the attitude towards the game was terrific. That’s the one thing that I wanted from them.

“I think they were a real credit to themselves today because a lot of these players are out of contract, a lot have uncertain futures. But that didn’t reflect in the way they went about their business.

“I also think, on reflection, we’ve come up short and we’re all disappointed with that but before my arrival, at the start of season, many people tipped Carlisle for potential relegation, so I think for this group of players they’ve defied the odds in many ways.”

Yeovil, meanwhile, ended their 16-year stay in the Football League as their relegation was confirmed the last week.

“I think the gameplan went like we wanted it to go,” said interim manager Neale Marmon. “First half, we knew the wind was in our face and we managed to control it so they could only shoot from long distance.

“In the second half, towards the end of the game, we had four chances. The keeper did very well. We wanted to score goals and we didn’t.

“I think we deserved to win today. But it’s been like that all the way through the last six weeks.

The Glovers have failed to win any of their seven games during Marmon’s caretaker spell, drawing four – something he admits he’s disappointed with.

“We’ve been so close; especially the home games against Crawley, Colchester and today. I think we deserved to win all three games.

“OK, that’s part and parcel when you’re down the bottom, those goals don’t go in.”
