Alloa survive following draw with Ayr

Alloa guaranteed themselves another season of Ladbrokes Championship football courtesy of a 1-1 draw with Ayr at Somerset Park.
With Queen of the South beaten 3-0 at home to Partick, the point was enough to lift Alloa out of the relegation play-off spot and into the all-important eighth place in the table.
Knowing their Championship future was on the line, Alloa started the game strongly, creating numerous chances before deservedly opening the scoring just after the half hour.
After Dario Zanatta had rattled the crossbar in the 22nd minute, Connor Shields fired home only his third goal of the season, and first for three months, after being teed up by Kevin Cawley.
Alloa’s lead, though, was shortlived as just four minutes later the prolific Lawrence Shankland scored his 34th of the campaign with a right-foot effort from inside the area.
Both sides had opportunities after the break but it was Alloa who were left celebrating come the final whistle.
