Downes eyes safety following Wimbledon win over Wycombe

AFC Wimbledon manager Wally Downes is targeting one more victory to secure his side’s safety after they overcame Wycombe 2-1.

The Dons hauled themselves out of the Sky Bet League One relegation zone courtesy of a Joe Pigott brace.

The Wimbledon frontman, who also missed from the penalty spot, netted either side of Alex Samuel’s equaliser to haul his team two points clear of the relegation zone and leave Downes dreaming of safety following a run of one defeat in their last 11 outings.

“We’ve worked hard to get ourselves in a position to do something. The hard bit was getting back into the pack,” said the Wimbledon boss, whose side are also unbeaten in six games.

“With four games to go, I thought we needed one draw and two wins. We’ve got to go again. We’ve got to win again on Saturday.

“The draw against Luton gave the fans a belief. I said the boys going into the Luton game that if you look at our last eight games, there was going to be one point’s difference.

“There was a resilience about us. Prior to [the game against Wycombe], we’d drawn four games on the trot.

“I can see an improvement in every game and on Friday, I told them: ‘do what you normally do but do a bit more’.

“I knew if enough of them upped their performance by one per cent, then we could turn the draws into a win. All we need to do is improve on the draws and we did that.”

Piggot broke the deadlock when he nodded home from close range seven minutes before the break.

Samuel needed just four minutes after the restart to restore parity and then headed against the bar but Piggot’s clinical effort ensured that his team are still alive and kicking.

Wycombe could also still go down on the final day of the season with defeat to Fleetwood and a major swing in goal difference and Chairboys manager Gareth Ainsworth is naturally keen to avoid any late shocks.

Ainsworth said: “It’s a weird sensation [almost being safe] but there’s 0.1 per cent chance that we’ll be a League Two club next season.

“Let’s concentrate on that and make sure we don’t mess it up and give sloppy goals away.

“Nothing’s certain yet, so I’ll make sure the preparation’s right for Fleetwood next week.

“Let’s not look at individual games. If after 46 games we’re still in League One, then it will be an amazing achievement.”
