Campbell urges Macclesfield players to stay focused

Sol Campbell says Macclesfield’s players must maintain their focus following a crucial  1-0 Sky Bet League Two win at Port Vale.

David Fitzpatrick hit the winner in the 66th minute to leave the Silkmen two points clear of the relegation zone heading into the final weekend.

The goal also relegated Yeovil, leaving Notts County as the only team who could catch Macclesfield.

“The boys were excellent again today,” said Campbell. “The conditions were tough out there and we really had to grind things out.

“To get the win was massive for us, of course, and the players really showed some excellent battling qualities.

“I was really pleased with the desire they showed to get the job done.

“To be out of the relegation zone and have our fate in our own hands is very pleasing, but the job is not done yet.

“There is plenty of work ahead this week and it is really important that we maintain our focus and to do all we can to go and get the job done next Saturday.

“At this stage we have not achieved what we want to do.

“It is going to be a massive game next week and there will be a lot of tension. The players just need to keep their focus on our objective.”

Vale boss John Askey was disappointed with his own side’s display.

“It was a really poor performance, they were there for the taking in the first half,” he said.

“There was not enough effort there today and the players need to look at themselves, considering it was the last game at home.

“The players just have not come out in the second half.

“The majority of players need to ask, have they done enough and where will they be playing next season?

“If they want to be a pro footballer then they need to show more than they did today.

“I just think the decision making was poor, we got into good positions and didn’t get crosses in. You have to do that in this weather.

“I will look at myself as well. As a manager you are very disappointed by performances like that.

“I will see if I can do more. If we all do that then we won’t go far wrong.”
