Stendel praises Barnsley players after victory over Blackpool

Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel praised his team’s character after they came back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory over Blackpool and remain on course for automatic promotion from Sky Bet League One.
Barnsley dominated early possession but the visitors took the lead in the 15th minute.
A cross into the Barnsley box found Armand Gnanduillet whose delicate flick set up Harry Pritchard for a shot which took a wicked deflection off Jordan Williams and found the back of the net.
Barnsley’s deserved equaliser came in the 40th minute when intricate play on the edge of the box allowed Cauley Woodrow to turn and fire a shot into the bottom corner.
The Tykes scored the winner when Cameron McGeehan’s corner was met by Liam Lindsay at the front post and his header flew into the back of the net on the hour.
Stendel said: “The tension was high today for me and the players. After going one down we played well and created chances, we deserved to win this game.
“In the second half Blackpool didn’t really come near our goal and we had opportunities but I’m very happy with the performance today and proud of my team in performing in a difficult situation.
“We can only influence our game and our result, we have one game left and we need a very similar performance to win and make 100% sure of automatic promotion.
“Today we are happy about our game and results in other places, but we are fully focused for the game next week.
“We have the chance to decide the end to the season with the games in our hands. After 45 games to work so hard it’s great to be in this situation.”
Blackpool boss Terry McPhillips was proud of his side’s performance despite the narrow defeat and appreciated Barnsley’s quality.
McPhillips said: “You can’t fault our lads, their effort came in abundance. We played against a top team right on it today.
“We’ve got to do better with the ball but I’m proud of the players today. It would be easier to think we can’t go up, we can’t go down, so we can take the foot off the gas, but they were supreme.
“The blocks we made, our defending and a few goalkeeper saves were brilliant. We knew we’d have to do that here, they were superb today.
“It’s a shame because we paid for our mistakes, we had a bit of luck, but I’m really pleased with the effort and desire. They’ve shown their passion for what they do.
“Full credit to Barnsley, it was a hell of a performance from them, the crowd and the occasion were great.
“We gave them a scare, we gave them a match, we were always in it until the end but fair play to them.”
